William Henri Horton

William Henri Horton (Bill), of Athens, GA, died on June 8, 2022. The son of the late Sarah Louise Griggs and Lester Henry Horton Jr., and stepson of the late Harry George Schaffer.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Peggy Anderson Horton, his daughters, Paula Horton McCurry (Jeffery), Sarah Ridgeway (Jennifer), Leila Wood (Matthew), Mandy Kero (Kathy).  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Eileen Totter, Drew Totter, Shaun Carter-Totter (Jamie), Elijah McCurry, Senya Kero, Saryn Kero, and Selah Kero, great-grandchildren, Claire, Liam, and Logan, as well a brother, David Sutton, and quite a few beloved cousins.

Bill was born on September 6, 1940, in Charlotte, NC. He was raised in Bishopville, SC, a place he continued to love.  He left Bishopville to go to College at Wingate in North Carolina, where he met the woman who would become his wife, Peggy Anderson.  Later, he would join the Navy, and they would get married in San Diego, CA. After returning to North Carolina, he would join the Air Force for 16 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.  He retired from the Air Force in 1980.  He went on to finish his degree at the University of Georgia and become a History/Social Science teacher at Morgan County High School in Madison, GA.

After retiring from his second career, he and Peggy would spend their retirement years traveling and volunteering.  He spent several years volunteering at Athens Regional Hospital alongside Peggy.  His final years were spent with family and friends.

There will be no service, per his request. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Athens 780 Timothy Rd, Athens GA, 30606.
