Stanislaus Skalski

February 1, 1934 — May 8, 2022

Watkinsville, GA

Stanislaus Skalski, 88, of Watkinsville, Georgia, passed away
peacefully in his sleep on May 8, 2022. Stan was born
February 1, 1934 to Antony and Josephine Skalski in
Palisades Park, New Jersey. He was the ninth and youngest
child of Polish immigrants who stressed the importance of
education; Stan and 6 of his brothers would go on to earn
graduate degrees. His father died in 1936 when Stan was 2
years old. Stan earned a bachelor’s degree at Brooklyn
Polytechnic in 1958. While also working at RCA, he completed
Masters and Doctoral degrees in Physics at Rutgers University
in New Jersey, researching low temperature physics and the
burgeoning field of superconductivity. In 1964 Stan joined the
faculty of the Physics Department at Fordham University,
where he taught for over 40 years, frequently serving as chair
of the department. Stan met Phyllis Ann Lipinski at a family
gathering and they were soon engaged. They married in 1966
and a year later saw the birth of their son Anthony James. In
1968, they moved to Demarest, New Jersey, the town that
would be their home for some 30 years. Daughters Felicia
(Lacksen) and Erica (Ladd) soon followed. Stan enjoyed
reading, gardening, coaching his daughters’ softball teams,
and spending time at the Demarest Swim Club with family. His
call to service led him to run for a seat on the Demarest Board
of Education where he served 12 years, including many as the
board’s chairman. He famously lost an uncontested election by
virtue of write-in votes for an alternate candidate, sparked by a
controversial board decision. In 2006, Stan retired and he and
Phyllis relocated to Watkinsville, GA to be closer to family.
Stan was predeceased by his parents, seven brothers and one
sister. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, son Anthony (Jennifer)
Skalski, Felicia (John) Lacksen and Erica (William) Ladd; and
eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on
Thursday May 12, 2022 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Lord and
Stephens, East, 4355 Lexington Rd. Athens, GA
