Robert Sidney Lowrey, Jr., of Athens, passed away on January 21, 2023. Born on June 9, 1934, he was the son of the late Robert Sidney Lowrey, Sr. and Nell Ellenburg Lowrey of Rome, Georgia.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. His great joys in life were his family, teaching and helping others.
He was a professor of Animal Science at the University of Georgia. His love for teaching was culminated in being awarded the DW Brooks award for excellence in teaching in 1981. He was awarded many other honors during his time at the university culminating in being inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2003.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Jean Lowrey; children, Robert Hugh Lowrey, Julie Lowrey Cannon.
Survivors include his sons, Philip Lowrey, Paul Lowrey (Laura); grandchildren, Lazarus and Abe Lowrey, Iris, Gus and Sam Cannon, Lanier Lowrey, Sean Armour, Shari and David Drisscol; siblings, Sam Lowrey, Penny Atkins, Shirley McDermott, Darrel Lowrey; great grandson, Sol Drisscol.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Cornerstone Church Athens with Pastor Steve Stringham officiating. The family will receive friends, Friday, the evening prior to the service, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, Athens. Interment will follow the service at Athens Memory Gardens.
