Martha Anne James

Martha Anne James, 87, of Watkinsville, died on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Born in Fayetteville, NC to the late Clarence B. Rhodes and Lindsay Andrews Rhodes, Martha moved to the Athens area in 1990. She had previously resided with her husband and family in Florida, Kansas, New Jersey, California, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Stone Mountain, Georgia. In Athens, she and her husband co-founded and operated J's Variety Store, which was originally located on Clayton St and relocated to North Ave in 1993. She was active in her business until it closed in 2012. Many will recall her as "the Flower Lady."

Along with her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Howard A. James, her sisters Doris Rhodes of Carlton, Constance Hicks of Greenville NC, Betty Gardner of Fayetteville NC, and her brother Frank of Orlando FL.
Martha is survived by her sons, Theodore R. James (Celia) of Bogart and Stanley N. James of Buford; grandsons Andrew R. James (Kaylin) of Marietta, William H. James of Athens, and Henry P. James of Atlanta.
At Martha's request, there will be no formal services held.
