George Walker Thurston, 81, of Athens, Georgia, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 19, 2021. The son of the late George Bryant Thurston and Martha Malone Thurston, he spent his early years in Monticello, Georgia and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina before entering high school.

George was preceded in death by his son, Troy Walker Thurston. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, George is survived by his loving wife, Judy Corne Thurston; his two daughters, Jill Thurston (Bonnie) and April Burel (Brad); his son, John Thurston (Julie Ann); daughter-in-law, Julie Rizzi (Vince); sister, Georgia Adams; grandsons, Troy W. Thurston, Jr. (Abby), Coleman Thurston, Jack Stevens, Foster Thurston, Marshall Thurston and Michael Thurston; granddaughter, Rebekah Stevens; great grand- children Emory and Hunter Thurston.

George worked at Duke Power Company and retired after 30 years of service. He was an avid golfer and spent much of his free time on the golf course with his dear friends. He was a tried and true University of Georgia football fan and loved nothing more than watching the Bulldogs play. George was a Shriner and served in the Army Reserves. Loved and adored by many, he will forever be in our hearts. The family would like to personally thank the Caregivers of Athens and St. Mary's hospice for providing such excellent care.
A memorial service in his honor will be held on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 2:00 in the afternoon at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, West, Watkinsville, Georgia. A reception to visit with friends and family will be held directly afterwards. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
