Gayle Duncan

September 27, 1946 — December 6, 2021

Athens

Alice Gayle Hardeman Duncan, 75, of Athens, died December 6, 2021.

Born in Athens, she was a daughter of the late Augustus T. and Kathleen Hardeman and was preceded in death by her sister, Patsy Hardigree.

Gayle married the love of her life, Lamar, on December 30, 1966, and over the past 55 years they built a life that was beautiful and a wonderful example of a life well lived.

Gayle dedicated her life to caring for others.  After the birth of her second child, she made the decision to devote her time to her family and children, leaving her position with the Clarke County Clerk’s office.  Her passion was found in raising her three children, and being a grandmother to her six grandchildren.  In addition, she was a caregiver to many family members over the years, including her sister, and both of her parents.  Her truest God-given gift was being in service to others, and she did it with such grace and compassion.

Gayle enjoyed being a part of her bridge club, was an amazing baker, and loved to cook and care for her family.  Summers at the beach with her children and grandchildren are among some of her most valued memories. She and her husband always enjoyed spontaneous trips to explore the mountains and would see where the road would take them.

Gayle is survived by her husband, Lamar; children Kelly Atkinson and her husband Kirk of Arnoldsville, Keith Duncan and his wife Michelle of Athens and Karmen Petrie and her husband James of Watkinsville; 6 grandchildren, Sean Atkinson, Cody Atkinson, Nathan Duncan, Rachel Duncan, Nolan Petrie and Lila Petrie.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 9, 2021 beginning at 1:00 PM at Tuckston United Methodist Church.  Services will be at 2:00 PM with Dr. John Brown officiating followed by private interment in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tuckston United Methodist Church or University Cancer and Blood Center/The Cancer Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 49309, Athens, GA 30604 www.cfnega.org.
