Bishop

Frederick Emmet Harbold was a loving father, voracious reader and connoisseur of the Great American Songbook. He died Feb. 19, 2020, in Bishop, Georgia, at the age of 89.

Fred was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Feb. 7, 1931, to the late Emmet Elson and Gertrude Frances Harbold. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marjorie Hacker and Regina Harbold.

Fred spent his early years in Indiana, graduating with an accounting degree from Butler University in 1953 where he played saxophone in the band and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served two years in the Army, stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, before earning a master’s in business administration from Northwestern University in 1957.

Fred, a CPA, spent more than 35 years in banking, most notably as an officer at Northern Trust Bank, traveling into Chicago every weekday morning on the train. He retired in 1996 as CFO and controller at First National Bank of Warsaw (Indiana), during which time he also served on the board of the YMCA.

Throughout his life, Fred was a dapper dresser, enjoying cooking and traveling, especially to Italy. During the early part of his retirement in McCormick, South Carolina, he was a Rotarian and served as treasurer and choir member of the First United Methodist Church of McCormick.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Freeman (Chandler) of Bishop, Georgia; grandsons, Andrew Thomas Freeman and Zachary Frederick Freeman; former spouse, Cynthia Springer Harbold of Bogart, Georgia; brother, Donald Harbold; sister, Dorothy Thomas (Donald); sister-in-law, Ellen Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
