Constance "Connie" Mullan Obituary

Constance Elaine Mullan, 94, went to be with our Lord on January 28, 2024, after a battle with lung cancer.

Connie, a longtime resident of Athens, Georgia, was born February 27, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Walter and Norma Weiler.  Her father was an accomplished home builder, and the Wisconsin Historical Society has recognized his house on Idlewood Drive as the Walter and Norma Weiler House. Connie had lots of stories about growing up in this house with her sister Audrey and her brother Tom. After graduating from Whitefish Bay High School, she tried secretarial work but hated it because her typing skills were awful. Instead, she enrolled in the School of Nursing run by the Daughters of Charity in downtown Milwaukee. She often joked that she chose the profession because the nursing uniforms, especially the blue capes, were so sharp, but her decision launched a career that lasted many years. She worked at Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Pete, Florida, and at St. Mary’s Hospital and Athens Regional Hospital. Connie loved nursing and went back to college in her fifties to earn a Bachelor of Science degree. She continued to work part-time even through her eighties. In her final job with the Athens Community Council on Aging, she gained some recognition as the “cake baker” for their Healthy Grandparents special events. Connie Mullan always had a sweet tooth, and she had fun sharing desserts with patients, family, and friends.

She belonged to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, participated in the first Catholic Charismatic group in Athens, and attended Bible studies. Her gigantic whale, which was constructed from two lamp shades for teaching the story of Jonah, was a highlight of her Sunday School class. Indeed, Connie was happiest in the middle of a project, and the dining room table was usually covered in canvas, paint, and sometimes even sawdust. She took art classes at the Lyndon House and exhibited her paintings there and in local businesses. Flowers, birds, and farm animals were favorite subjects in her watercolors. She also researched and wrote a short novel about guardian angels and gave everyone in the family a copy.

Connie is survived by daughter Taylor McKenna (Rod Landis) of Watkinsville, Georgia; son Richard Mullan (Kim Mullan) of Vero Beach, Florida; daughter Pat Nate of Lebanon, Tennessee; granddaughter Nikki Stephenson (David Stephenson) of Brookhaven, Georgia; grandson Alex Ortiz of Washington, DC; grandson Matt Mullan (Mabel Mullan) of Coral Springs, Florida; granddaughter Spencer Doss (Conall Doss) of Watkinsville, Georgia; and great-grandchildren Ella and JD Stephenson, and Monroe Mullan.  She is also survived by brother Tom Weiler (Renee Weiler) of Meridian, Mississippi; nieces Chelle Collins and Debbie Troutman of Englewood, Florida; nephew Rick Reinheimer (Jackie) of Charleston, South Carolina; niece Jill Weiler-Crawford; and nephew Chris Weiler of Meridian, Mississippi; along with grandnieces and grandnephews.

She is preceded in death by her father Walter Weiler, mother Norma Weiler, and sister Audrey Troutman.
