Carvin Lee Brown

February 5, 1942 — April 27, 2023

Carvin Lee Brown, 81, of Athens, Georgia went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 27, 2023. He was the son of the late John Morgan and Addie Mae(Watson) Brown.

Carvin’s growing up years from birth to 19 years old were spent in Center Hill, Florida until he joined the United States Air Force in 1961. Shortly after basic training, Carvin returned home on a brief leave to wed the love of his life Nancy Carolyn Grover.

Together the two of them left the familiarity of their hometowns to begin a new life. Carvin served in Air Force until 1968 with Nancy by his side. During that time, Carvin obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in 1968. They returned home where Carvin began his career as an educator at Webster Jr. High. Not long after he began teaching, he became the assistant principal at Wildwood High School until the end of the 1973-74 school year. He also managed to obtain Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of Florida. During the 1974-75 school year Carvin was the principal at Immokalee High School in Immokalee, Florida. After a year there, Carvin and Nancy moved to Athens, Georgia where he took a position at the University of Georgia as an associate professor in the college of education. Carvin worked there teaching education administration until he retired in 1998. During his tenure in the college of education, he served as department head and the associate dean of services. As an educator, Carvin had the opportunity to touch many lives in a positive way. His wisdom, compassion for people, and desire to pay it forward paved the way for others to be successful.

Following retirement, Carvin moved to Appalachian State University for a brief period before returning to Athens. Upon returning to Athens, Carvin became the head of the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC) for about 10 years before retiring completely.

Carvin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy, his sons, Martin (Elizabeth) Brown, Jeffrey (Marika) Brown, daughter, Rebecca Dean, grandchildren, Abigail (Clint) Weimer, Rachel Brown, Sarah (Drew) Richardson, Joshua (Mandy) Brown, Caleb Brown, Anthony Tognarelli, Marc Tognarelli, Laurel Short, Madeline Dean, great grandchildren, Lila Weimer, Reed Weimer, and Ella Richardson. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry (Linda) Brown of Center Hill, Florida.

Carvin was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn Frame and Earnell Fussell and his brother Charles Brown.

During his lifetime, Carvin thoroughly enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and hunting. Many of those who knew him benefited from a Carvin Brown fishing expedition or hunting experience. Several bologna sandwiches and Vienna sausages were consumed along with many campfires enjoyed by friends and family.

While he will be missed by many for many reasons, he will be most missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family has fond memories of multiple outdoor adventures with Carvin. He never minded telling a good joke or story to all who would hear.
