Listen to Obituary

Winifred Preston Thomas, 90, of Athens, entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 4, 2026. Born on August 25, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Archie Barrett Preston and Nimmie Louise Preston. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Thomas; her grandson, Brandon Hardigree; and her siblings, Nimrod Preston, Carolyn Goodwin, and Nancy Head.

She is survived by her children, Ann Sweetser (Steve) and Jim Aycock (Sherry); her grandchildren, Elizabeth Lloyd, David Lloyd, Allyson Morgan (Parker), and Anna McAllister (Travis); and her great-grandchildren, Valencia Rosa, Eliza Morgan, Laurel Morgan, and Charlotte McAllister.

Winifred graduated from Monroe High School, where she played the bugle as a member of the Monroe Girls Corps. She later attended Stetson University in Florida.

Known to her grandchildren as “Maw,” Wini was a creative and witty soul with strong opinions and a curious spirit. She loved to paint—often birds, flowers, or the beach—and to read, write poems, and compose prayers. An avid reader, she was particular about her books, choosing only what she described as “good” ones.

Throughout her life, Wini followed her curiosity wherever it led. She worked in many different roles, including driving a semi-truck, owning and running a pizza parlor, working in University of Georgia family housing, and later greeting customers with warmth and humor as a Walmart greeter. She was known for spontaneous drives in her hatchback, often heading to the beach—her favorite place, and one she never tired of returning to. She will be missed by her family, who take comfort in knowing she is fully healed in her heavenly home.

Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes, East, Athens, GA is assisting the family with the arrangements. www.lordandstephens.com
