It is with deep sorrow and immense love that we mourn the passing of Willis Edward “Ed” Michna, Jr. (affectionately known as Poppie and Daddy), of Houston, TX, and Athens, GA. Ed passed away on September 11, 2025, at the age of 76, surrounded by family in Athens after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
He will be forever cherished by his devoted wife of 54 years, Pamela Walker Michna; his dear children, Lisa Michna Shurter (Greg Shurter) and Holly Michna (Bob Sears); his beloved grandchildren, Hannah Michna (Cole Chambers), Ally Shurter, Emma Shurter, William Pylant, and Abby Pylant; and the newest addition to his loving family, his great-grandson, Charles Edward Chambers.
Born in Refugio, Texas, and raised in Corpus Christi, Ed learned the value of hard work and integrity early on as he worked and earned the recognition of Eagle Scout. He later moved to Houston, where he began a long and successful career in banking, graduating from the Southwest Graduate School of Banking at SMU in Dallas, and where he served his loyal customers for over 40 years. It was in Houston that he met the love of his life, Pam, with whom he shared countless adventures and a lifetime filled with joy, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they created a family rooted in faith, fun, and, most of all, love. Ed’s daughters will forever remember him as the best Daddy they could have ever asked for. And his 5 grandchildren will always remember their Poppie as being actively involved in their lives and always up for an adventure, no matter how big or small. His quick wit, infectious humor, and warm presence made every moment in his company unforgettable.
Beyond family, Ed’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched. He had a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life and treasured the relationships he built, both personally and professionally. This is evidenced by the many customers who credit their incredible success to Ed because he believed in them when no one else would. Often, he was the glue that helped others stay connected near and far. Whether in his personal or business life, he was a shining example of integrity, kindness, love, and hard work.
We are all left with a tremendous hole in our hearts from the loss of this great man, husband, Daddy, and Poppie. The world has lost a man with uncommon integrity and such a kind heart, at a time when it seems the world needs it most. Therefore, in his memory, we ask that you consider honoring his legacy by smiling at a stranger, believing in others, and being kind to all.
In keeping with his wishes, no formal service will be held. Instead, Ed requested that his ashes be spread in the special places accessible and reminiscent of his legendary road trips.
If desired, memorial donations may be made in Ed’s honor to Fair Play Camp School. This is a non-profit organization that was very near and dear to Ed’s heart and from which Ed’s family personally benefited. Fittingly, Ed’s birthday is on Thanksgiving this year. If you would like, please email Pam at pmichna@sbcglobal.net with any personal stories of Ed that are special to you. We plan to read the stories in his memory as we gather for our first holiday without him.
