Walter “Gary” Larkins, beloved teacher, coach, mentor and friend, died peacefully in Athens, Georgia on August 13, 2025. He was born in Waycross, Georgia to John and Dorothy Larkins on September 14, 1953. He was the middle child of three boys; John (the oldest) and Jeff (the youngest). They moved to Albany in 1963 and then on to Athens in 1970. Gary was first exposed to the game of soccer while attending Athens Academy his senior year. He then attended college at The University of The South, in Sewanee, TN, where he became a member of the soccer team, and graduate.

His first job out of college was with Frederica Academy in 1975. He taught mathematics and coached soccer and tennis for more than 25 years. He left Frederica in 2000 and began teaching and coaching soccer at Glynn Academy for 13 more years. His last decade of teaching was at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School.

Gary’s love of athletics and teaching served him well for his entire career, as mathematics educator, successful Coach and Athletic Director. He was an extraordinary legacy as a champion youth and interscholastic soccer coach in the Golden Isles. He was selected numerous times as GISA Coach of the Year in soccer and tennis, winning several state team titles and was inducted into the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He was also an active referee for the Georgia State Soccer Association, as well as the Georgia and Florida High School Associations.

Gary loved the island life of St. Simons, where he spent time with his closest and dearest friends. His greatest joy was spending time with them; just walking the beach, scuba diving, playing tennis, bike riding or hanging out with his Liar’s Poker buddies. He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for his kindness, strong work ethic and legacy of dedication and character. These qualities will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to have known him.

He is survived by his loving brother, Jeff Larkins and wife, Phylis of Watkinsville, Georgia and numerous nieces and nephews; Bo, Lydia, Jake, McKinley and Matt, as well as twelve great nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Gary’s remarkable life will take place in the Golden Isles. Details will be shared once plans are finalized.
