Vivian Posey

Laura Vivian McMeans Posey, 99, of Watkinsville, Georgia passed away peacefully in her home on June 30th, 2026. Vivian was born on August 9, 1926, in Stockdale, Texas to Murl and Annie McMeans.

Vivian was born a Texan but has lived most of her adult live in Athens, Georgia. Her husband Wyatt coached football at the University of Georgia so she became a staunch fan, spending many hours rooting for the “Dawgs” and loving every minute of it.

She loved her time volunteering for the Athens Regional Auxiliary (former Red Cross). She volunteered her time for over 20 years. During her tenure, she was recognized for her loyal and conscientious service. She was a true example of service above self.

She was a proud member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Vivian devoted herself to her family and loved to entertain, cook, sew, and practice cosmetology. Her meals were delicious and her skills as a seamstress were unmatched. She designed and made many of her daughters’ clothes and she served as the personal beautician for all her family.

She made many trips back home to her native Texas to visit her family. She was like a mother hen always looking over her little flock, making sure all her siblings were cared for and had their needs met in the “Depression Days”.

She especially liked to visit in the Spring during Bluebonnet Season. Her early adult life was spent in San Antonio, where she and her sister Merlene lived and worked. She later lived in the Rio Grand Valley and then in Lubbock where she met and married her husband James Wyatt Posey while he was coaching at Texas Tech. They were happily married for 53 beautiful years.

Even though she adopted Georgia as her home, her heart remained very much in Texas. Her beautiful smile would light up any room and her Texas family held that vision until the next time she returned home to visit.

Vivian is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Wyatt Posey, her siblings Merelene, J.O (Sonny), Joanne, Bettye, and Barbara.

She is survived by her children, Debra (Mike) Maxey, David (Catherine) Posey, Dennis (Tamera) Posey, and Dinah Laura Posey.

She also is survived by her grandchildren: Joe Maxey (Katherine), James Maxey, Dylan Posey (Janine), Ellen Tilkens (Mike), Shelby Posey, and Margot Posey and her great grandchildren: Sarah and Robert Wyatt Maxey, Leo, Perrie, and Cameron Tilkens, Landon Posey, Ava, Bella, and Oliver Perkins.

Our hearts are heavy with her passing, but she will have a place in our hearts forever.

Services will be held at the Lord and Stephens West Chapel on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Pastor Rick Brittain of Mars Hill Baptist Church will be officiating. A private interment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park.

Donations may be made in memory of Vivian Posey to the Piedmont Athens Regional Auxiliary.
