Vernon G Meentemeyer

Vernon G. Meentemeyer, 81 of Athens, died on Saturday, January 20, surrounded by his family.
A native of Washington County, Illinois, Vernon was born on November 7, 1942 to the late George Walter and Elsie Garling Meentemeyer. He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University and continued his education and earned a Master of Science and PhD degrees.  He then served his country as an officer in the United State Air Force. Arriving in Athens in 1973 he joined the University of Georgia Geography Department teaching and conducting research.  He was drawn to teaching and mentoring students. He published numerous scientific research articles and earned the Creative Research Medal for the University in 1985. His career spanned 32 years in higher education and research.
Vernon enjoyed making memories with family and friends boating at Lake Hartwell and traveling and experiencing new places. He was a world traveler visiting 51 countries over the years. He loved planning the next adventure.
His two sons were his proudest accomplishments though. He treasured the men they had become, and his grandchildren were his greatest delight.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 57 years, Suzan and his sons, Dr. Ross Meentemeyer (Jelena) of Raleigh, NC and Jason Meentemeyer (Susanna) of Carnesville, GA; grandchildren, Asa Meentemeyer, Aidan Meentemeyer and Sabine Meentemeyer of Raleigh; and step grandchildren; Hunter Hiland and Gabe Hiland of Carnesville, GA. Other survivors include his sister, Evelyn Randall of Belleville, IL and brother, Steve Meentemeyer of Okawville, IL.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 25 at Tuckston United Methodist Church, Athens, GA at 3PM.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made to the Vernon G. Meentemeyer Geography Support Fund c/o UGA Foundation or Tuckston United Methodist Church.
