Tommie Jones

November 12, 1939 — November 21, 2023

Athens

Jackquline “Tommie” Spence Jones, 84, of Athens, died on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Born and raised in Athens, GA, Tommie was the daughter of Thomas Spence and Jewell Paul Spence. Tommie lived in the Athens-Clarke County area her entire life except for during her husband’s military career when they were stationed in El Paso, TX. She was proud graduate of Athens High School, class of 1958, and a member of Boggs Chapel United Methodist Church.

Tommie was an incredibly sweet lady who was never known to say a bad word about anyone or to have a bad word said against her. The only grudge she ever held was against her husband for not taking her to see Elvis when his tour stopped unexpectedly in El Paso. She was beloved at home and at work; she served as a clerk in the Athens-Clarke County Superior and State Courts for over twenty years. She loved animals and dancing; as a high school student, she and some friends skipped class to go to Atlanta and danced on American Bandstand. She was a skilled gardener, a great friend, and a wonderful wife, mother, and Mema.

Along with her parents, Tommie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Allen Jones.

She is survived by their two daughters, Leisa Jones of Smyrna and Kimberly (Jeff) Melton of Arnoldsville; her brother, Charles (Vickie) Spence; granddaughter Samantha Melton (Damon Robertson); a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Martha Harper and Pam Maxwell.
