Thomas Edgar Noell, 88, passed away on December 7, 2023. Born on February 22, 1935, to the late James E. Noell, Sr. and Mary Noell, he grew up in Crawford, GA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Alma Huff Noell, who died in October of this year. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James E. Noell, Jr. and his great-nephew, David “Alex” Swann.
Tom graduated from Oglethorpe County High School and from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1960. His work career included eight years in the Office of the Clerk of Court in Oglethorpe County, eight years at Benson’s Bakery, twenty-two years with Golden Pantry, and fourteen years at Athens First Bank and Trust/Synovus. He was a dependable, dedicated and loyal employee.
He worshipped, served, and shared his faith at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Athens. His service included leadership as a Deacon, an Elder (Emeritus), and Financial Secretary for many years. He was active in the Men’s Fellowship and outreach service. He filled terms of service on the Property, Trust, and Stewardship Committees. He and his wife, Alma, supported the church with time and talents. They were present for all church activities and were workers behind the scenes tending the needs of others.
Tom loved to sing. His rich, bass voice often filled the car – singing along with the Gaither Brothers on the radio. He sang with the church choir and other special music presentations.
He and his wife, Alma, were a tireless team caring for others in good times and in times of need or sadness. Countless miles and hours were spent sharing good wishes, a treat from Alma’s kitchen, a friendly visit, a small gift for a child, a thank you, and always a smile.
He is survived by his nephew David Lee (Tammy) Swann of Jefferson, GA; great-nephews: Holden (Amber) Swann and David (Larrisa) Poole and great-great-nephews Samuel Swann, Mason Poole and Chevy Thompson, extended family and close-as-family friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 11, at 2pm at Lord and Stephens West Chapel with Rev. Elizabeth Hagan and Rev. Ray Austin officiating. Private interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First Christian Church of Athens, 268 W. Dougherty Street, Athens, GA.
