Steven Shelnutt

Steven Shelnut, 66, of Athens, passed away on April 11, 2026. Born on June 29, 1959, he was the son of the late Henry Edward Shelnutt and Ruth Burson Shelnutt.

Steve graduated from UGA, where he was a trumpet player for the Georgia Redcoat Band. Even after graduating, he remained an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Redcoats. In his younger years he enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactments and mastered playing the trumpet. While playing the trumpet, he met James Brown on many occasions and was offered the opportunity to tour with him. Steve was known for being playful and for his unique sense of humor

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gabriel Thomas Shelnutt.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen Shelnutt; son, Nathaniel Shelnutt; brother, Ed Shelnutt (Carol).

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2026 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, Athens.
