Sister Maria Susanna

Sister Maria Susanna (Susan Ann Malloy) 79, passed away peacefully at her hermitage in Athens, Georgia on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Born in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, she was a daughter of the late Robert Malloy and Clarissa Williams. Bright and joyful she was known for her radiant smile, infectious laugh and her ability to organize and tackle any project.

In 1955 the family moved to Enfield, Connecticut. She graduated with honors from Enfield High School in 1964 and went on to continue her education at UConn (University of Connecticut) in Storrs, Connecticut. In 1968, she married Daryl Dean and moved to Indiana. After raising her two sons in Whitestown, Indiana, Susan entered the Carmelite Nuns on Mount Carmel in Israel in 1990 where she received her religious name Sr. Maria Susanna and embraced the life of prayer and contemplation. In 1998, she was transferred to the Carmelite Monastery in Buffalo, New York, and in 2010, answering a deeper call to solitude, she continued her religious vocation as a hermit in Italy and then in her final years as a hermit of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, GA, where she remained steadfast in her spiritual commitment and devotion until the end.

Survivors include her sons, Father Maximilian Dean and Jason Dean; granddaughter, Faith Dean and sister, Kathy Gregory.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Athens. Visitation will be held at Sister Maria Susanna’s hermitage in Athens located at 9 Layla Court on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Interment will follow at a later date at the Carmelite Monastery in Fairfield, Pennsylvania.
