Thomas Sammy Hansford passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2015 after a brief illness. The eldest child of the late Bubba and Rosella Hansford, he was a lifelong resident of Oconee County born June 28, 1946.
He graduated from Oconee County High School in 1965. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Gwen Elder on June 8, 1966. He then served four years in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970.
After his military service he worked for the Athens Clarke County Fire Department, Thaxton Turkey Farms, Oconee County School System as a bus driver, private contractor for several trucking companies, and was self-employed as a farmer. He retired February 2015 from Hanson Trucking.
He will be most remembered as the "Peanut Man" of Paw Paw P'nuts. He could always be found at the Watkinsville Farmer's Market, festivals, and parades for the past 15 years.
He was a member of Antioch Christian Church and served as a volunteer with the Oconee County Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Gwen, a daughter Holly Hansford Jackson (Will), and son Scott Hansford, two grandchildren Makayla Jackson and Hollis Jackson, a brother Steve Hansford (Gina), and sister Martha Jo Barnes (Don). He is also survived by a sister-in-law Martha Williams (David) and a brother-in-law Nathan Elder (Lisa) and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Antioch Christian Church on Saturday, December 12, at 2:30 pm with the Reverend Scott Bartholomew officiating.
