Roberta Sue (Gunnells) Bahnsen

Roberta Sue Gunnells Bahnsen, 90, wife of the late Elton Boyd Bahnsen, died Monday, December 30, 2013. Mrs. Bahnsen had celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family just a few days earlier on December 26.

A lifelong resident of the Athens area, she was born in Neese, Ga, and she was the daughter of the late Charles Sterling Gunnells and Ruby Holcomb Gunnells Mathews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her son: Michael Eugene Bahnsen; step father, Clarence Mathews; step brothers James Judson Mathews and Donald Wayne Mathews; and son in law, David Abercrombie. She retired from the University of Georgia, Georgia Center , and was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: Marie Abercrombie of Athens, Lynn (Dianne) Bahnsen of Bogart, Elton (Kathy) Bahnsen, Jr. of Seneca, SC; sister: Gloria Helen Sorrow of Atlanta; grandchildren: Jeffery Abercrombie, Suzanne Feinstein, Meg Titshaw, Ben Bahnsen, Brett Bahnsen, Shea Bahnsen, LeAnn Stewart, Michael Bahnsen, Jr., and twelve great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, and herfaithful caretaker and friend, Linda Stephens.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at 11AM at Lord & Stephens East Chapel with Rev. Doug Nix officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the Old Hull Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials, may be made to Prince Avenue Baptist Church building fund.
