Richard (Dick) Thomas Mayer, Jr., age 81, of Athens, GA died on June 16, 2026. He was the son of the late Richard Thomas Mayer, Sr. and Lucy Larue Walters (maiden name Daniels, formerly Mayer).
He attended the University of Georgia and earned a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Entomology. After completing his Ph.D. in 1971, he began his career with the USDA/ARS (Agricultural Research Service). He ascended to the position of lab director and was assigned to multiple locations over the years, including Orlando, FL, Ft. Pierce, FL and Laramie, WY. Dick was the recipient of numerous national and international scientific awards; a publisher of a well-respected scientific journal, Archives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology; and he went on international sabbaticals in France, Germany, Belgium and South Korea during which he conducted multiple research projects.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday July 16, 2026 at Oconee Chapel, 2370 Hwy 53, Watkinsville, GA, at 11am. The inurnment will be after the service in, Oconee Memorial Park.
Dick is survived by his wife, Gabriele (Gabi), his son, Christopher Mayer (Gretchen), his daughter, Stefany Roberts (Rob), three grandsons (Jake, Elliot and Cole), and two great-grandsons (Xander and Tucker).
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Athens Area Humane Society.
