Athens

Dr. Paul P. Popov passed away July 2nd, 2024 at the age of 90. He was the son of the late Peter Klimentevich Popov, and Evdokiya Ivanovna Ivanov-Popov, from Rucheiki and Sosonka areas, Pskov Oblast (region), Russia. He was born September 5th, 1933. He and his parents were taken from Russia to forcibly work in German munitions plants during WW2. The last location was Erfurt, which USA troops took. They were lucky to emigrate here to USA in 1948 from a displaced persons camp.

Prior to his retirement he taught for several decades at university of Georgia teaching Russian language, history and culture. He was very physically active, even playing softball with “the young guys” when he was 84 and he played hard. He also did translation work and as involved in a Christian society that helped Slavs immigrate here. He was called upon several times in local courts for translation purposes, and helped many sort through problems.

His students really enjoyed his classes, letters and cards of thanks from his students were a very common event. His passion for educating and in a great manner was shown by even years after retirement still receiving them.

Dr Popov never quit missing his life prior to war in Russia, the wonderful culture, history and language which he taught to his children. He was quite a football player, and earned a college scholarship and one year as an “All American” football player. He studied at East Carolina, NY university, Middlebury, University of Miami, and finally settled on teaching at UGA in the early 70s. He was a Marine officer, leaving as a Captain to start a family.

Service will be a private family event. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved Mother at Tuckston Methodist church cemetery.

He is survived by his 3 children, Ann Popov Finnan, Paul Alexander Popov, and Danny Robert Popov.

Grandchildren are Hannah, Alannah, Grace and Zach Finnan, Alex and Katie Popov, Arwen and Gavin Popov. Great Granddaughter Ava and Grandson Finn Shepley.
