Pamela Michele Weldon Carter, 75, a long-time resident of Madison County, died unexpectedly June 9 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

Born May 9, 1951, in Tifton, Michele was the daughter of the late Sam and Marcella Weldon. She attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia and was employed in several departments at UGA.

On August 5, 1972, Michele married Harry Ray Carter, a game warden with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. They were wed in a Douglas County forest, a setting that reflected Michele’s life-long fondness for nature and the outdoors.

Michele and Harry moved to Madison County in 1974 where they built a log house near a stream on nine acres of forested land. Michele lovingly shared and supported Harry through a 31-year career with DNR that included many adventurous, sometimes dangerous episodes enforcing Georgia outdoor laws.

A talented seamstress and fan of old movies, Michele enjoyed many outings with Harry to Georgia mountains, lakes and beaches and a memorable anniversary trip to Mexico. Though private by nature, she was a woman of strong Christian faith and a caring and devoted partner to Harry through 54 years of marriage.

In addition to her parents, Michele was preceded in death by her brother Sam and sister Suzanne. Survivors in addition to Harry are brother Steve Weldon and wife Debra of Lithia Springs; niece April and husband Scott Bray of Lithia Springs; sisters-in-law Linda Carter of Lavonia and Gail Carter Dendy and husband Larry of West Chester, OH; nephews Brian Carter, Piney Flats, TN; Tracy Green and husband Bobby, Sparta, TN; Tony Carter and wife Jennifer, Hartwell; Christopher Dendy and wife Rozy of West Chester, OH; and several great nephews and nieces.

The family expresses appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of the St. Mary’s Hospital Emergency Room for their efficient and professional attention and care of Michele, and to Michele’s many friends for their kindness and expressions of love.
