Michael H. Warfield ("Mike") passed away April 6, 2023 at his home in Athens, Georgia.
The son of the late Bernard and Martha Warfield, Mike was born December 19, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. One of the “founding fathers” of Internet Security Systems, Mike retired from IBM, where he held the title “Senior Wizard.” As an internationally recognized expert in internet security, his articles were featured in professional publications, and he served as a frequent conference speaker. He represented his company as a member of the Forum of Incident Response Security Teams (FIRST) and also served as a member of the SAMBA team. Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix. Mike loved to travel and visited all seven of the world’s continents. He loved active adventure and was very proud to have made five bungee jumps, including jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge in Zimbabwe and the Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed practical jokes and “playing” with telemarketers.
He is survived by his wife, June Lovenbury Warfield; son Scott Warfield (Devin Hardin) from Liveoak, Florida; daughter Faith Lovelind (Liz Lovelind) from Athens, Georgia; daughter Shannon Godwin (Chris Godwin) from Flowery Branch, Georgia; son Greg Warfield, from Suwanee, Georgia; 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his brothers Steve Warfield (Lynne), Chris Warfield (Kathy), and Dave Warfield, all from Michigan.
A remembrance service will be held at a later date.
