Mary Lou Hamby, 78, died March 8, 2026.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, EAST, with Revs. Rusty Couch, Eric Stevens, Brad Ingram and Chief Jerry Saulters officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Born April 25, 1947, in Athens, GA, she was a daughter of the late Welton Cleveland and Dora Lou Finger Damron.
Mary dedicated more than five decades of service to the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, beginning her career in 1975. She retired in 2006 after serving as the Clerk of Municipal Court, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and commitment to public service.
Following her retirement, Mary continued her passion for serving the community by joining the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, where she served as Volunteer Coordinator for Community Outreach within the Community Oriented Policing Unit. Over the years, ACCPD volunteers have contributed more than 55,000 hours of service, equating to over $1.5 million in man-hours, a testament to Mary’s leadership, dedication, and tireless advocacy for volunteerism. This year marks 20 years with the ACCPD and an incredible 52 years of total service to the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government.
Affectionately known as “Ms. Mary” she is truly the heart of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, embodying service, compassion, and community in everything she does.
Survivors include her children, Kimberly (Jim) Ingram and Holly (Chris) Green; four grandchildren, Brad (Katy) Ingram, Jennifer (Michael) Tate, Garrett (Jordan) Green and Kendall (Daylon) Bowen; six great grandchildren, M.J. Tate, Miles Tate, Malachi Tate, Maverick Tate, Peyton Green and Emma Green.
