Athens - Miss Marguerite Crowley, 97, a resident of Lanier Gardens in Athens , died January 23, 2011. A native of Oglethorpe County , she was born September 3, 1913, the youngest daughter of the late William Hall and Lizzie Mae Landrum Crowley. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Annie Lucile Corbin and Mildred Elizabeth Collier. Miss Crowley moved to Athens , 1920 with her family. They lived first with her mother's sister, Mrs. Floy (Fred) Whitehead, whose daughters, Hazel W. Ivey, Martha W. Faw, and Carolyn W. Wheeler currently survive her. She joined Prince Avenue Baptist Church and began a long career in its music ministry. She was recognized in 1969 for having retired as Minister of Music after 38 years of service of pianist, organist, and sometime choir director. She became a church pianist while a senior in high school. She also participated in several other parts of church life, including church clerk, BYPU director, and church historian. She was honored in 2007 as one of the oldest and yet most active members when the congregation closed its Prince Avenue Campus and moved to its new location in Oconee County . She was employed by S. H. Kress Company and later by Hutchins-Cox-Stroud until her retirement in 1979. Miss Crowley then moved to Petersburg , Virginia to assist in the care of her brother-in-law prior to his death. She returned to Athens in 1983. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 2PM at Lord & Stephens West Chapel with Rev. Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford City Cemetery . The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made Prince Avenue Baptist Church . Lord & Stephens West is in charge of arrangements.
