Athens - Malcolm Ferril NeSmith died Sunday morning, August 28, 2005. Malcolm was born in Lawrence County, Alabama, on March 11, 1924. He served in the 1st Calvary Division, US Army, in World War II. He trained on horseback and as an engineer and served in the South Pacific and Japan. Later, Malcolm graduated from the Decatur Trade School and worked for the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, as a tool designer. Mr. NeSmith was a charter member of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He was involved in the fabrication of Redstone, Jupiter, Saturn launch vehicles and in main engine fabrication on the space shuttle. He held seven patents for his tool designs.
He and his wife of over 60 years, Virginia, moved to Athens, Georgia, in 2001 to be near their son, Jerry NeSmith, and his family. His two sons Jerry Blake NeSmith and John David NeSmith; his grandchildren, Matthew Jason NeSmith, Noel NeSmith-Lawson, Sara Elizabeth NeSmith; a great grandchild, Brady Alexander Lawson; and a daughter-in-law, Farol Lea NeSmith, survive Mr. NeSmith.
Viewing will be Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, 1211 Jimmy Daniel Road, Bogart, GA from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A celebration of his loving life will be held at Oconee Presbyterian Church, 2601 Hog Mountain Road, Watkinsville, on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at 11:00AM. Burial will follow at Oconee Memorial Park.
