Lucy Pierce (Jones) Coleman

January 29, 1926 — December 18, 2022


Lucy Jones Coleman, formerly of Hilton Head Island, SC, died early Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Presbyterian Village in Athens at the age of 96, about one month short of her 97th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, Nan Taylor Jones and Pierce Harper Jones, and her husband of 70 years, Frederick Ansel Coleman.

Born in Mountain View, SC on January 29, 1926, Mrs. Coleman was the youngest of 11 siblings. She married Frederick Coleman in Miami in 1945 while he served in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge from service, they moved to Greenville, SC. In 1952, Fred and Lucy sold almost all of their belongings and moved with their daughter to Jackson, SC where they went to work for the new Savannah River Plant. They retired in 1984 and moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C. where Lucy lived until moving to Athens in 2020. She was a dedicated member of St. Andrew By the Sea United Methodist Church on Hilton Head.

Mrs. Coleman is survived by her daughter Virginia ‘Jenny’ Coleman, son-in-law David Shipley, granddaughter Shannon Coleman Shipley Hinson and her husband Nick Hinson, and great-grandchildren Arthur Elliott Hinson and Lucille Jean Hinson.

A memorial service will be held on Hilton Head Island in the Spring at St. Andrew. In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial donations to the Friday Soup Kitchen, St. Andrew By the Sea, 20 Pope Avenue, Hilton Head Island, SC, 29928.
