Loy Archie Hayes of Cheverly, Maryland entered into heaven on Sunday, March 26, 2017 after an extended illness. He was 81 years old.
Reverend Hayes was a native of Athens, Georgia and attended Winterville High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia and a Master of Theology from Candler School of Theology, Emory University.
Over the course of his 40-year career, Rev. Hayes served as pastor of many churches in the North Georgia area including Tignall UMC; Kincaid UMC, Griffin; 1st Methodist Church, Jasper; St. Matthew UMC, East Point; West Rome UMC; Young Harris UMC, Athens; and Conyers 1st Methodist Church. After retiring from the North Georgia Conference and moving to Maryland, he became a member of Cheverly United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents Loy and Goldie Hayes of Athens; son Jimmy Van Hayes of Orlando, Florida; and brother James E. Hayes. Rev. Hayes is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Seagraves Hayes and son Loy A. Hayes, Jr., both of Cheverly; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Fran Hayes of Athens; and his niece Wendy English and her husband Brent English, his nephews Shawn Hayes, Corey Hayes, Eric Hayes, and great-nieces and nephews including Blake, Abby, and Jackson.
Services will be held as follows:
Family visitation will be held at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home on March 31st from 6:00-8:00 PM
Memorial services will be held in the chapel of Tuckston United Methodist Church on Lexington Road on Saturday April 1st at 2:00 PM
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to either the following organization or to the charity of your choice:
(1) Cheverly village.org This is part of a nationwide movement to help seniors age in their homes and communities
(2) United Methodist Childrens Home w.umchildrenshome.org/
