In Loving Memory of Laurence Edward Fortson
December 13, 1951 – October 6, 2026
Laurence Edward Fortson, born December 13, 1951, in San Francisco, California, went home to be with His Lord and Heavenly Father on October 6, 2026. He grew up in communities throughout the United States before eventually making Georgia his home and developing a lifelong connection to the University of Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Norval Fortson, and his mother, Ann Mary (Betti) Fortson. He never married but he is survived by many friends who count him as a brother including dear friends Julie, Christina, and Jay, whose faithful friendship, love, and care were a special blessing in his final years. Their kindness and devotion helped surround him with comfort and companionship, and they will forever hold a treasured place in his story.
Laurence graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in statistics. Following graduation, he began working at the University of Georgia Bookstore, where he devoted 28 years of service. His years at the university strengthened his connection to the Bulldog community and a place that would remain close to his heart throughout his life.
Laurence was, without question, one of the biggest Georgia Bulldog fans in Georgia. A devoted supporter of the Red and Black, he held season tickets to Georgia football, basketball, and baseball. His knowledge of Bulldog sports was legendary; he could recall statistics from seasons long past and was always ready to discuss players, games, and Georgia’s storied athletic history. Cheering on the Bulldogs was far more than a pastime for Laurence—it was a lifelong passion.
After retiring from the bookstore, Laurence continued sharing his financial expertise as finance and operations manager for Missionary Care Ministry in Bogart, Georgia, helping support its ministry of caring for missionaries and ministry leaders. He also served as bookkeeper for Gateway United Methodist Church and operations for Blue Donkey Coffee, contributing his skills to organizations in his community. He found time for the Strickland’s Breakfast Bunch which gave his day a laughing start and camaraderie. Laurence ultimately retired from these professional responsibilities in 2022 to enjoy retirement.
Laurence also shared his love of music with church communities, playing drums for various churches and serving with the praise band at Celebrate Recovery. Through music, he helped bring people together in worship, encouragement, and fellowship.
In his later years, Laurence was blessed to spend time at home with wonderful caregivers who treated him like family and also at The Landing, where he received care and support. The kindness of those who walked alongside him during this season was a meaningful part of his life’s journey.
Laurence will be remembered for his dedication, his remarkable knowledge and enthusiasm for Georgia athletics, his musical gifts, and the many connections he made throughout his life. His love for the University of Georgia and its Bulldogs was unmistakable, and those who knew him will carry fond memories of his unwavering loyalty to the Red and Black.
In lieu of flowers, we request that consideration of memorial gifts be made to Missionary Care Ministry in Bogart, Georgia, an organization Laurence found purpose in and faithfully served.
And if you ever find yourself at a Georgia Bulldog game, take a moment to shout “Go Dawgs!” to the heavens. There is little doubt Laurence will be right there shouting with you.
Go Dawgs!
