On Sunday, March 31, 2024, Laura Childs Ackerman, 57, of Winterville, Georgia, passed away while surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Athens, Georgia, she was the cherished and beloved wife of Jerry W. Ackerman, daughter of the late Rex and Doris Childs, mother of Nathaniel McGrath and Erin (Nate Strait) McGrath, and sister of Mark (Kathy) Childs, David (Lynne) Childs, and Lynda Childs Dunlap. The abounding love she had for her husband and children was evident in the way she cherished her time with them, supported and encouraged them through each milestone, and edified them in life’s ups and downs.
After graduating with an Engineering degree from the University of Georgia, Laura excelled in her career with the EPA. Throughout her 30 years of service, she was highly esteemed by her colleagues for her irreplaceable support and leadership and was sent into retirement with a sense of melancholy.
Whether for work or recreation, adventure or challenge, Laura’s passions were health, fitness, and the great outdoors. Countless miles were clocked training outside cycling and running as she prepared for a multitude of races, including triathlons and the coveted Boston Marathon.
Within nature and its essence, peace and serenity filled Laura’s soul through the color splashed mountains in the fall, carefree hikes with friends and family, and the warmth of the sun shining on her face from simply stepping outside. Above all, Laura cherished her time at the ocean. She was transfixed by the sight of its beauty, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, the feel of the wind blowing off the water, and the sensation of the sand beneath her feet.
Laura lived life to its fullest and cared deeply for all. Those who were lucky enough to be gifted by her love and friendship, admired her for her kindness, generosity, positive attitude, wit, and beautiful smile. To those lives, she has made a lasting impact, and a void has been left in their hearts.
A memorial service honoring and celebrating Laura’s treasured life will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Lord and Stephens East Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until service time.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society or the Athens Area Humane Society as a tribute to Laura’s life.
