Jon Stephen Spencer, 77, of Statham, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on September 3, 2025. He was born on January 29, 1948 in Roswell, New Mexico to the late Donald “Cotton” Earl Spencer and Betty Jean Bloome Spencer. Jon grew up a military brat but sources say he may have moved frequently to prevent being discovered as an alien considering his interesting birth timing and location. His family eventually settled in the southern Illinois area, farming and raising Duroc pigs. Jon enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and obtained the rank of Sergeant. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he attended college at the University of Georgia where he met and married Mary Margaret Hale Spencer. They were married for 45 years until her death in 2017.
Jon attended Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary where he became an ordained minister, also worked in sales, and was a loyal, steadfast family man. Jon was a member of Gratis Church. He enjoyed fishing, going on adventures with his children and grandchildren, and watching movies and working puzzles with his caregiver, Ashley Cancel. He was an avid Georgia Bulldawg fan, recently rooting them to two consecutive national championships!
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Betty Spencer, his wife Mary Spencer, his daughter Penny Michelle Spencer, and his nephew Randall Wesley Spencer.
Jon is survived by his daughters Katherine Spencer (Monzel) Weaver of Bethlehem, GA, Karen Danielle Spencer of Dahlonega, GA and son Daniel Nathan Spencer of Statham, GA. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren Madison Grace and Abigail Londyn Weaver who lovingly called him Gru-Gru, his brother Jeffrey Alan Spencer, nieces Ashley Elizabeth Spencer and Emily Colleen Spencer and nephews Geoffrey Clayton Spencer and Greyson Tyler Spencer.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at Gratis Church at 3200 Perry Smith Road NW, Monroe, GA 30656 on September 14, 2025. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm with service to follow at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in memory of Jon Spencer to an educational fund set up for his grandchildren at https://venmo.com/u/Madison-Abby-education.
