Johnny A. Maxey, born in Clarke County, Georgia, to Johnnie H. Maxey and Thelma Pat (Maxwell) Maxey on July 29, 1940. A proud graduate of Athens High School, Johnny went on to serve in the United States Navy before graduating from Terry Business College at the University of Georgia in 1967.
He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Susan Hamby Maxey; his children, Mark Maxey, Karla Cash, Todd (Mary Elizabeth) Strickland, and Burt Strickland; his grandchildren, Leslie (Christian) Dice, Andrew (Emily) Maxey, Chelsea Cash, JT Cash, Brayden (Jaden) Strickland, Amelia Tye, Maddie Strickland, and Bennett Strickland; his special great-grandchildren, Noah John Maxey and Beau and Cullen McClelland; siblings, Ron (Joy) Maxey, Linda (Roger) Peck, and Brenda (Tim) Merola, along with many nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Sam H. Maxey, Grace Chandler, Carolyn Haley, and Rhonda Maxey; and his special brother-in-law, J. Larry Hamby, and sister-in-law, Janie Hamby.
Johnny had an early interest in real estate and land, which grew into a lifelong passion and successful career. He was the broker of Maxey Real Estate, where he built a reputation through his work in real estate development and sales throughout Clarke, Oconee, and the surrounding counties. He especially enjoyed purchasing tracts of land, developing properties, and building apartments and residential homes. He took great pride in his work and had a genuine appreciation for the land and the opportunities it offered.
He was a true outdoorsman, Johnny loved hunting, fishing, hiking, and all types of watersports. He enjoyed being outdoors, riding his tractor, and spending time on his beloved farm and in the mountains. Work was something he loved, and he remained active and engaged in the things that brought him joy throughout his life.
He was an active member of Grace Fellowship, Watkinsville, Ga.
Johnny will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his quick wit, and his gift for storytelling—even if you weren't always quite sure where the story was going! He was an overall good guy with a big personality, a generous spirit, and a love for making people laugh. Children especially adored him because he always knew how to meet them on their level and make them feel special.
Above all, Johnny loved his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than entertaining, laughing, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He treasured those moments and the memories made with each of them.
Johnny's life was tragically changed following an accident on his beloved farm on October 5. Complications from the injuries he sustained ultimately resulted in his passing one month later. Until the accident, he had lived a full, active life doing what he loved most—working, enjoying the outdoors, and being surrounded by family.
His absence will leave an immeasurable void in the lives of his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. He will be remembered with love for his adventurous spirit, his humor, his stories, his hard work, and, most of all, the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to know him.
