In Loving Memory of John Preston Lay (Johnny)
Johnny Preston (Johnny) Lay passed away at his home on April 9, 2026, in Watkinsville, Georgia. Born on May 2, 1939, to Mattie and John Preston Lay of Farmington, Johnny's life was a testament to the values of family and the quiet strength of a life well-lived.
Johnny was raised in Farmington, and for the majority of his 86 years, he was part of the Watkinsville community. Known for his warmth and steady presence, he was a man who understood that the greatest blessings in life are found in the people we love. He was a loving son, a devoted husband, and a guiding force as a father and grandfather.
Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Melinda Lay, and his sister, Tootsie. While his passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, his family takes comfort in the lasting impact of his kindness and the memories that will continue to enrich their lives.
Johnny’s spirit and character live on through the family he so dearly cherished. He is survived by his fiancée: Martha Witcher, with whom he shared a special and loving chapter of his life, his sons: Jay Lay, Mitch Lay, and Mark Lay; grandchildren: Kacie Blackwell, Mendi Brown, Preston Lay, Jake Lay, Adrien Wood, and Drew Lay and great-grandchildren: Greyson, Emren, Blake, and Boone.
To those who knew him, Johnny was more than just a coworker, a neighbor or a friend; he was a source of wisdom and a steady hand. He had a unique ability to see the best in those around him and provide wisdom when needed. He simply enriched the lives of all who crossed his path.
A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Watkinsville First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Oconee Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 10, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
