Mrs. Janet Noble of Athens passed away peacefully in her home on November 15, 2025 at age 97. She is survived by her three children: Susan and David W. of Athens and Steven C. of Decatur, GA. A third son, Robert E. Noble, died in a traffic accident some years before in Atlanta, GA. All of Janet's children were graduates of Clarke Central High (or Athens High) School and received diplomas from local Georgia Colleges. Janet was loved by her family, friends and all of those that knew her in the Athens Garden Club, The University Women's Club, and members of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens.
Janet was born in Tama, Iowa and was educated in the public schools graduating in 1945. She entered the University of Iowa that year, graduating in 1949 with a B.A. degree in Speech Pathology. In her Junior year at Iowa, she was inducted into the Women's Mortar Board Honor Society. She spent a year in Bremerton, Washington working in Speech Pathology, returning to The University of Iowa in 1950 to complete a Masters Degree in Speech Pathology. She studied under the famous Dr. Wendell Johnson during that time.
In the fall of 1950 she met her future husband at Iowa and they were married in the Presbyterian Church near the campus on Feb. 1, 1951. Upon her husband's recall to active duty as an officer in the United States Air Force, they moved to Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, TX. There Janet counseled speech therapy cases in San Antonio where her first child was born.
After four years of service, her husband Dr. Clyde E. Noble was called to LSU as a professor of Psychology, and she counseled speech therapy cases in Baton Rouge, LA from 1951 to 1954. While there, her second child was born. Then, Dr. Noble was offered a professorship at The University of Montana where their third and fourth children were born.
Janet volunteered as a den mother for the Cub and Brownie Scouts and continued managing the home. After seven years they made their final move to Athens where Dr. Noble accepted a professorship at UGA in Psychology. As soon as the youngest graduated, Janet decided to go back to the workforce first in Retail Sales and then for many years as a successful Realtor in the Athens area. Janet was an avid gardener, expert cook and studied and practiced stock investing deep into her retirement. She also served as president of the Beechwood Hills Garden Club for several years.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association in remembrance of Janet.
