James “Jim” Cantey Means, 82, of Athens, Georgia passed away on April 25, 2025. He was born on September 27, 1942 in Comer, Georgia. He was the son of James Clarence Means, Jr. and Barbara Alice Birchmore Gaissert.
James grew up in Comer, Georgia and was a graduate of Madison County High School. He served in the United States Air Force during the Cold War and Vietnam War, being assigned to Strategic Air Command working on B-58 Bombers. After his military service, he joined the Athens Police Department and had a 12-year career as a motorcycle cop.
With his experience and training in pneumatics and refrigeration, he worked as a refrigeration technician for several companies throughout his career. James was a model airplane enthusiast and built and flew many small and large models. He enjoyed working on small engines and continued this as a hobby for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Alan Means.
Survivors include his son, Mike Means and a sister, Caroline Durden along with many nieces and nephews.
