Jack D. Howard was born on September 28, 1934 to late Ernest Walker Howard and Gertrude Hansford Howard in Stephens, GA. He peacefully passed away at his beloved home on Sunday, May 25, 2025. He was a lifelong dedicated member of Salem Baptist Church. Jack was very devoted to his church along with his fellow members and he was seen regularly through the years of his life. Jack was a devoted Southern Railway professional and respected local historian, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and pride in his heritage.
A native of Lexington, Georgia, Jack began his career after graduating from Oglethorpe County High School in 1953 and then attended Athens Business College and Georgia State University. After early clerical work, he joined Southern Railway in 1960, serving for many years on the company’s elite office cars—rolling executive suites used for business and inspection across the railway’s vast network. In this demanding role as the executive assistant to the Vice President of Southern Railway, Jack provided administrative and personal support to him, earning his trust and admiration. Known for his discretion, professionalism, and quiet dedication, Jack was a fixture in the Southern Railway’s most visible and trusted positions, eventually working out of its Washington, D.C. headquarters. After retiring, Jack returned to Lexington, Georgia, where he became a passionate family and local historian and was a longtime member of Historic Oglethorpe County, Inc and served on the board for year. He took pride in preserving the stories of the people and places that shaped his community, generously sharing his knowledge with others. Jack will be remembered not only for his service on the rails but also for his devotion to history, heritage, and the people of Oglethorpe County, Georgia.
Graveside service will be Thursday May 29, 2025 2:00 PM at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Brett Mask officiating. The family will visit in the fellowship hall prior to the service from 1:00 PM to service time.
In lieu of flowers, you may make memorial donations to the cemetery fund for Salem Baptist Church.
