Hiram Mack Thurmond

Hiram Mack Thurmond was born in Farmington, Georgia in 1947 to the late Alfrus Henry Thurmond and Lois Vickery Thurmond. His mortal life ended on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

Mack grew up in a small town with family, friends, church and a baseball field. The family dairy was just down the road. Farming was hard work and interfered with baseball, so Mack studied computers and accounting. He learned to appreciate work, but he always remembered his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ellen Verner Thurmond and their sons, Jeff and Brett. Additional survivors include his granddaughters, Augusta Kilburn (Evan), and Megan Thurmond and his sister, Patsy Savage (Frank).Mack was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Wyverlyn Peck and his brother, John Thurmond.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 19, 2025 at 4:00 pm at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church – 3195 Barnett Shoals Road in Athens.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the Lord and Stephens West funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 800-805-5856 or to a charity of your choice.
