Gregory Franklin Holcomb, age 85, died Thursday, June 26, 2025.
He was born on May 10,1940 in Madison County, Georgia. Greg was the son of the late J. Frank Holcomb and Pauline Minish Holcomb. He was a Presbyterian during his married life of 50 years to Jennifer F. Holcomb. He died at their home in Presbyterian Village Athens, with his wife Jennifer at his side. Family members, Hospice, and staff from Lord and Stephens Funeral Home came to assist.
Gregory was a graduate of the University of Georgia Terry College of Business. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association in 1976, and was a member of the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association. He worked extensively for Lloyd’s of London and underwriters at interest. Greg’s name was put forward by Lloyd’s underwriters to U.S. legal entities handling North American losses. From London, Greg was instructed to work on the Pan Am 103 plane crash over Scotland and countless other products liability and catastrophic personal injury cases. He also worked on difficult cases with Bill Clinton when he was Arkansas Attorney General and with Donald Trump for the Trump Corporation. He worked with the Craig Institute in Colorado to help plan settlements with judges and families to cover the lifetimes of persons with paraplegic and quadriplegic personal injuries. For women who lost their husbands in accidents, he set up special plans to cover the educations of their children as part of a settlement.
When it came to Athens and the University of Georgia, Greg brought his usual positive energy and enthusiasm to everything he touched. He sponsored student scholarships into the future with an endowment at the Terry College of Business. The Holcombs donated the Peabody Awards Gallery in the new Richard B. Russell Special Collections Library. The Georgia Museum of Art received American antiques, art, and artifacts for their programs, and he generously sponsored many evening performances at the Performing Arts Center. Greg enjoyed following the Dawgs through the football season and attending Bowl Games around New Year’s. Greg served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserves for 6 years, working in a Civil Affairs Unit.
Greg is survived by his wife Jennifer Holcomb, one son Lin (Adrienne) Holcomb of Stone Mountain, sister Brenda H. Werner (John) of Athens, niece Heather Werner of Athens, and nephew Johnny (Michelle) Werner of Ringgold, Georgia.
