Fay Harrell Koppenaal, 79, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on March 24, 1947, to the late Welton Harrell and Elizabeth Strickland Harrell.
Fay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and friend whose kindness and warmth touched many lives. She is survived by her loving husband, Gary Koppenaal; her daughter, Stacy Feagin Lubniewski, step-daughter, Laura Koppenaal (JJ McCarthy) step-son, Andrew Koppenaal; and her granddaughter, Madeline Lubniewski; nieces, Lynn Jones (Jerry), Susan Henry, and Ellie Hayes; and her great-nieces and great-nephews, Michael Hayes, Chandler Henry, Nathan Fortin, Lindsey Jones, and Brianna Swartz.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Linda McCullough; and her son-in-law John Lubniewski.
Fay dedicated much of her life to education and inspired countless students throughout her career. She taught at Southland Academy, Loganville Elementary School, and Georgia Southwestern State University. Her passion for teaching and caring for others left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She found great joy in the beauty of nature and loved spending time in the mountains, hiking scenic trails, relaxing at the beach, and enjoying a glass of wine. Above all else, Fay deeply loved her family and treasured every moment spent with them.
Fay will be remembered for her gentle spirit, love of learning, compassion for animals, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
A memorial Service for Fay will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday May 16, 2026, at Lord and Stephens East (4355 Lexington Rd. Athens GA. 30605) Family will be accepting friends one hour prior until service time.
