Eva Sue Lowe Shirey was born on May 28, 1940, in Good Hope, Georgia. Her parents were Harris Smith Lowe and Violet Lord Lowe. She had one sister, Betty Lowe Bowers, born in 1943.
She attended grade school in Good Hope and high school in nearby Monroe. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1958 where she was involved in numerous extracurricular activities including the National Beta Club Honor Society and the exclusive “Debutantes of Monroe.” She was a valued player on the varsity basketball team, being chosen as “Most Valuable Player” and captain of the team in 1958.
Following her graduation from Monroe High School, she attended Young Harris College where she earned an Associate in Arts degree.
After graduating from college, she began working as a secretary at the Water, Light and Gas office in Monroe. It was there that she met a handsome young man named Bill Shirey, a salesman for Ivan Allen Office Supplies in Atlanta, who was to become the “love of her life.” They were married on November 24, 1966.
As a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she was always involved in planning various activities for the family including trips to Ormond Beach, Florida almost every summer. She loved to shop for her family and friends.
Sue played the organ and piano for many years at Good Hope Christian Church and later Friendship Christian Church in Athens. She was always faithful in attendance and participation in church activities and was a member of First Christian Church of Watkinsville.
Sue was truly a generous, loving person and a living expression of God’s love to everyone in her life. She is survived by three children, Lee (Cindy) Shirey of Monroe, Dawn Blizard of Athens and Jeff (Erin) Shirey of Athens; sister, Betty Lowe Bowers of Good Hope; grandchildren, Kristopher (Jessica) Shirey, Tiffany Shirey Smith, Will Blizard, Joshua Shirey, Brooks Blizard, Asa Shirey, Tristan Shirey and Eli Shirey; and five great grandchildren, Trevor, Lexi, and Taylan Smith, Millie and Violet Shirey.
Funeral services will be Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST. Interment will follow at Good Hope Christian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
