It is with deep sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Emory Nelson Smith, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who passed peacefully on September 5th at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with multiple cancers. He passed at home on the land he cherished, surrounded by the love of this family.
He would spend his whole life on his family's farm in Danielsville raising his children on the same land he was raised on with a life rooted in the soil that shaped him. The farm, passed down from his parents was not just where he lived - it was where he found joy, purpose, and peace. Whether tending to the fields, mending / moving fences or bush hogging Emory was never happier than when he was outside, working with his hands and connected to the land he loved.
Emory dedicated over 30 years of his life to the University of Georgia, where his hard work and steadfast character earned him the respect and friendship of many. His retirement was well-earned and gave him more time to enjoy the rhythms of the farm, his greatest pride outside of his two granddaughters.
Emory is survived by his wife of 56 years, Syble Phillips Smith; his daughter, Annette Smith Rowland (Stan); and his granddaughters, Ansley Rowland Browne (Ben) and Ashlyn Marie Rowland. He is preceded in death in addition to his parents Leonard & Ophelia Smith, his son, Anthony (Tony) Nelson Smith.
Emory's life was a testament to the power of hard work, the strength of family, and the deep, unshakable bond between a man and the land he calls home. Though our hearts our heavy, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace, and that his spirit will forever live on in the fields he walked and the family he loved so fiercely.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow at 1:00 pm at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family would like to express gratitude to his Agape Hospice Care Team: Jessica, Amy and Jasmine and for all the prayers and support from family & friends during this time.
