Elizabeth Hinesley

March 18, 1935 — October 13, 2023

Elizabeth Hinesley was born in Macon, Georgia on March 18, 1935 and died in Bishop, Georgia on October 13, 2023.  She was the only child of George Dewey and Ida Hessel Proctor. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 55 years, W. Fred Hinesley, Jr.  She is survived by her son, William F. Hinesley, III (Valerie); granddaughters Carleen Sutton (Drew) and Catherine Douylliez (Jacob); great granddaughters Valerie Douylliez, and Anna and Elodie Sutton; and several nieces and nephews.  Elizabeth received a degree in English at Mercer, where she met her husband while working in the library and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She received advanced degrees in English at Emory University and the University of Georgia. Elizabeth taught English in Bibb County, beginning at McEvoy High School, continuing at Stratford Academy and concluding her career at Central High School. She was a lifelong member of Tattnall Square Baptist Church in Macon until moving to Savannah to be near her son’s family.  There she enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters, even braving substitute teaching at the high school they attended. Following the death of her husband, she relocated with her son’s family to Athens, GA in 2011. Elizabeth lived at Highland Hills in Athens where she was a member of the book club and a bridge group, played the piano for the chapel services, and volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital.  She belonged to the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 20 years and was an active member of Chapter AS, Savannah and Chapter BK, Athens, serving in several offices including President. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Macon Memorial Park, 3969 Mercer University Drive, Macon, GA.  A memorial service will be held at Oconee Presbyterian Church, 2601 Hog Mountain Road, Watkinsville, GA on Saturday, November 4 at 10:30 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elizabeth’s name (Chapter BK, GA) to the P.E.O.
