Edward John Standera Jr.

August 18, 1934 — October 18, 2023

Athens, GA

Edward John Standera, Jr. was born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, to Edward Standera, Sr. and Wanda Kotinsley. At the close of his high school years and completion of his time in the U.S. Navy, he enjoyed attending the University of Maryland.

After a move to Florida, Ed worked as a consulting civil engineer and was later employed in the space industry at Cape Canaveral. During this time period he met And Married Martha Ann Hood and, in 1968, son Joe was born.

A move to Athens, GA made it possible for his son to enroll in exceptional schools. Joe’s father then became Assistant City Engineer and later Public Works Director for Clarke County.

When hired as Public Works Director for the City of Gainesville, Georgia, Mr. Standera soon became active in several civic clubs to aid in improving Gainesville and Hall County. These included the Hall County Beautification Committee and Lanierland Civitan Club.

One of his favorite positions was teaching American Government at the University of North Georgia. While doing this he was based in the Oakwood and Forsyth County Centers.

In addition to his regular jobs, Edward spent much time excelling in his long-standing avocations, painting, and photography. Examples of his skills have been seen in many locations.

Ed is survived by his wife Martha, his son Joe, his sister Barbara Hough, his nephew Thad, and several other close relatives. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Wesley Woods of Athens, 801 Riverhill Dr. Athens, GA 30606, at 2:30 pm.

Memorial Contributions to honor Ed may be sent to the Wesley Woods Foundation, Wesley Woods of Athens, 801 Riverhill Drive, Athens, Georgia 30606.
