Edward Walker McDuffie Jr., lovingly known as “Big E,” passed away on July 10, 2026. Born December 19, 1953, in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of the late Edward Walker McDuffie Sr. and Vernona Chiles McDuffie. He had been a resident of Oconee County since 1995.

Edward was a devoted father, grandfather, loyal friend, and a man whose greatest joy was found in the people he loved. He never met a stranger and had a remarkable gift for making others feel welcome. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing a laugh, or quite literally giving someone the shirt off his back, his generosity and compassion were simply part of who he was. He possessed a quick wit and an infectious sense of humor, never taking himself too seriously and always finding a way to bring a smile to those around him.

Edward began his education at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta before attending The Winchendon School in Massachusetts, where he was recognized as an accomplished all-around athlete and received numerous athletic honors. He later attended the University of Georgia in Athens. He began his career in Atlanta as a stockbroker before following his passion for real estate, serving clients as a Realtor with Harry Norman and Keller Williams. In 1995, he relocated to Oconee County with a vision of building a life centered on family and opportunity. An entrepreneur at heart, he was also drawn to building and construction, always embracing the challenge of a new project and taking pride in creating something lasting.

Edward appreciated life's simple pleasures and created countless memories with family and friends. Summers were often spent fishing in Sea Island and St. Simons, camping at Lake Burton, and making annual trips to Ponte Vedra, where golf became another way to gather with those he loved. Weekends were frequently spent boating on Lake Oconee from his Reynolds getaway, a place where family and friends naturally gathered. A longtime member of Athens Country Club and Ansley Golf Club, he was an avid golfer who admired Bobby Jones, a connection made even more meaningful through his grandfather, John O. Chiles, affectionately known as "Happy," who shared a friendship with the legendary golfer.

An outdoorsman at heart, Edward was also an exceptional bow hunter and was known for being an incredibly accurate shot. He had an artistic eye, finding inspiration in the timeless black-and-white photography of Ansel Adams. He inherited his love of gardening and landscaping from his mother and took great satisfaction in cultivating beautiful spaces. Music filled his home, and some of his children's most treasured memories are of being rocked to sleep while listening to Van Morrison. His faith remained an important part of his life, and he was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Atlanta.

While he found fulfillment in his career and many interests, nothing compared to the joy he experienced as a grandfather. Affectionately known as "BB," he adored his grandchildren, who became the light of his life. They brought him endless happiness, laughter, and purpose, and the love they shared was evident to everyone who knew them together.

His legacy is measured not by accomplishments alone, but by the kindness he showed, the friendships he cherished, the laughter he shared, and the unwavering love he gave to his family. He leaves behind a life well lived and a lasting example of generosity, humility, compassion, and love that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Edward is survived by his two children, Edward Walker McDuffie III (Kimberly Banks McDuffie) and Nora Browning Watkins McDuffie IV; his beloved grandchildren, Edward Walker McDuffie IV, Banks Witmer McDuffie, Nora Eliana Sunshine, and Henry Clayton McDuffie; his sisters, Vernona Spencer McDuffie and Helen McDuffie Izlar; his former spouse, devoted friend, and caregiver, Nora Browning Witmer III; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

A private graveside service will be held at Madison Memorial Cemetery. A celebration of Edward's life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at The Dining Room, 231 Hancock Street, Madison, Georgia 30650, starting at 12:00 PM.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Johnny Collins ("J.C.") for his unwavering friendship, compassionate care, and the many ways he faithfully lent a helping hand.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Madison, Georgia, or the University Cancer & Blood Center, Athens, Georgia.
