Doyle “Dot” Carter Shivar went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 22, 2026. Dot was a follower of Jesus Christ and has now received the inheritance secured for her through the death and resurrection of her Savior and Lord. She was a member of the Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Even in the last few difficult years of her life, God manifested incredible goodness. Though living with the fog of dementia, Dot never lost her cheerfulness, kindness, or her desire to serve others. The great hymns of the faith were deeply planted in her, and she was still singing praise to the Lord in her final days.
Dot was born on September 29, 1930, the daughter of the late Thomas Grady Carter and Nancy Elizabeth Brown of Colbert, GA. She was married to the late James H. “Jimmy” Shivar, with whom she had sixty-four wonderful years of marriage. She was devoted to her family, and nothing brought her greater joy than her parents, nine siblings, two sons, four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. The blessing of family was a gift from God that she enjoyed and valued. Dot was known for her cooking, specifically her chocolate pie, and she loved nothing more than knowing that her loved ones were well fed.
Outside of her home, Dot spent most of her adult life on two vocations. She worked as the bookkeeper and accounts manager for Compton and Shivar Office Equipment. Later, she worked at the University of Georgia as a receptionist for the Student Affairs Office. While she was incredibly efficient in her work, she was best known for her cheerful disposition and encouraging words. She retired from UGA in 1995.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmy; her oldest son, Jamie; her siblings and their spouses, Bo Carter (Pat), Ralph Carter (Mary), Bud Cater (Annelle), Bob Carter (Betty), Mary Berryman (W.T.), Jennie Berryman (Ansley), Beck Guenther (Hans), and Joyce Darby (Jerry). She is survived by her son, David Shivar (Beverly); her grandchildren, Nate Shivar (Shannon), Lydia Koshy (Job), Hannah Simpson (Jimmy), and Jason Shivar (Ava); her ten great-grandchildren; her brother, Dink Carter (Malcolm); and many nieces and nephews.
She served her Lord, her church, and her family well and will be missed.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff at the Arbor Terrace Evergreen Unit. Fran, Keisha, Mary, Jennifer, and all the staff loved and cared for Dot as though she were their own family. Thank you! The family also sincerely appreciates the staff of Agape Hospice, who were so kind in Dot’s last days.
