She is also survived by two sons and their families, Tommy and Beth Beggs of Indiannola, Iowa, and Ricky and Vicki Beggs of Clermont, and a daughter and her family, Vicki Beggs and Terry Sims of Westwood, Massachusetts. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Dora Beggs of London, England, Royce Beggs of Carrollton, Will Beggs of Longmont, Colorado, Jake Beggs of Clermont, Matt Sims of Addis Ababa, Ethopia, Nick Sims of Boston, Massachusetts, and Sarah Beggs of Savannah. She is also survived by two sisters, Mary Frances Bryan of Athens and Betty Cleveland of Fort Valley and a host of nephews and nieces.
Evelyn was born in her Grandmother Dora Walter's home in Martin, Georgia on September 26, 1925 to Ernest and Nell Thomas. She attended school in Hartwell and Pine Mountain Valley, where she met President Franklin Roosevelt when he visited the school where her father was principal. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville with a degree in Home Economics. She met her future husband through his college roommate, who happened to be her cousin. After a short stay in Cumming, Evelyn and Wallace settled in Clarkesville where she was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church for 63 years. She taught Sunday School for children and nursery for most of that time. She also volunteered with Sharing and Caring.
Before she had a family, she was a home demonstration agent and loved to share her joy of cooking, especially yeast rolls and cinnamon rolls. After she had her children, she took care of her home with the same joy. Evelyn not only cooked wonderfully, but sewed for her family. She sewed the wedding dresses for her daughter and one of her daughters-In-law.
She also volunteered with Georgia EMC, Habersham County 4-H and the county home economics program.
Evelyn will be missed by her many friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Clarkesville Baptist Church Doctors Building Fund.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, December 26, at Clarkesville Baptist Church. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service.
