Donald Wayne Powell, 85, of Monroe, Georgia, went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2026, passing peacefully at his home. Born January 6, 1941, in Franklin County, Georgia, Donald lived a life rooted in faith, family, and the simple things that brought him joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Franklin Powell and Mary Sue Smith, and by his sisters, Myrtie Cowart and Kay Smith.

Donald is survived by his siblings Harold Powell (Shirley), Merle Powell (Judy), Barbara Farmer, and Ronnie Smith, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and several generations beyond. Though he never had children of his own, Donald loved children dearly and was a devoted uncle who took pride in being part of their lives.

Donald loved the Lord and loved his family. He found happiness in the things he enjoyed most—NASCAR, WWE wrestling, the Georgia Bulldogs, baseball, and football. He spent many hours reading, working word puzzles and word searches, building model cars, and adding to his Hot Wheels collection. In his younger years, he especially enjoyed camping and spending time outdoors.

Some of Donald’s favorite memories were made on ball fields and in bleachers, cheering on his nieces and nephews at their sporting events. He loved baseball and was always glad to teach the game, patiently showing them how to play and encouraging them along the way.

Donald worked for many years at the old Crawford Laundromat and later at Matthews Used Cars washing and detailing vehicles. After moving to Winterville to live with his sister Myrtie, who lovingly cared for him in his later years, Donald continued to wash and detail cars privately for clients he had come to know over the years.

For many years, Donald attended Edwards Baptist Church, where his faith was nurtured and remained an important part of his life.

Donald will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his love for family, and the simple, steady presence he was in the lives of those who knew him. His life was one of quiet faith, familiar routines, and heartfelt connections, and he leaves behind memories that will be carried forward by generations of family who loved him. Donald’s family takes comfort in knowing he is now at peace, reunited with loved ones gone before him, and resting safely in the presence of his Savior.

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions…I go to prepare a place for you.”— John 14:1–2 (KJV)
