Listen to Obituary

Diana Maywhort, beloved wife, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, with her family.

Diana was born on October 12, 1948 in Chattanooga, Tennessee and grew up there, going to school atop Missionary Ridge. She was very creative, and put on plays with her three siblings in their attic.

She attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she met her first husband, and graduated with a degree in Education. They married and had a son, Ben, who they raised across North Carolina, Minnesota, Louisiana, and finally, Georgia. She was a devoted wife and mother, sewing Halloween costumes for Ben, acting as team mother for his tennis team, and teaching at Fairington Elementary School.

She married the love of her life, Bill Maywhort in 2006 and lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and St. Simons Island, Georgia. She found joy in Colorado, where she continued her lifelong love of painting, started a women’s club, and traveled widely, including trips to Europe and Russia. She enjoyed music in many forms, including singing and playing piano, and especially dancing.

Diana is remembered fondly by her husband Bill Maywhort, her children: Ben Credle and his wife Kim, Blair Maywhort, and Andrea Scully, as well as her siblings Garry Tucker and his wife Gayle, Lisa Irwin and her husband David, and Sally Stroud and her husband Tommy. Diana took great joy in her five grandchildren, who knew her as Nonnie: Will and Gwen Credle, Kendall Maywhort, and Fiona and Vivi Scully. She also delighted in her nieces and nephews: Tommy, Wes, and Ansley Stroud, Tucker and Whitney Irwin, and Inglis and Hannah Tucker.

She was preceded in death by her parents John Tucker and Miriam Vaughn, and her first husband Duffy Credle.
