Listen to Obituary

Debbie Dove was welcomed to heaven on April 6, 2026, after a more than five-year battle with brain cancer. Debbie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, affectionately known as “Birdie,” whose legacy of selfless sacrifice and love will long shine in her family’s memories.

Born to Charlie and Vernice Isbell, Debbie was the second of two children and grew up in east Athens. Her childhood was wrapped in warm moments of the family she grew up with. With grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles living close by, the Isbell home was filled with the love of relatives and friends. Special among those relationships for Debbie were those with her maternal grandmother, Gertie Foster, and her maternal great-grandmother, Sarah Lowe. Debbie imbued the gifts of hospitality and serving others, qualities she inherited from these women and from her mother, Vernice.

The Isbell’s were lifelong members of Johnson Drive Baptist Church where Debbie would meet her future husband, Blanton Dove, Jr. Throughout her life, Debbie invested in the churches she attended, leading women’s groups, serving widows, and quietly looking after those who may be in need. Debbie graduated from Clarke Central High School in 1972 and she and Blanton were married on December 12, 1975.

Following their nuptials, the couple moved to Valdosta, Georgia where Blanton pursued a bachelor’s degree from Valdosta State College and where Debbie worked at The Herndon Company. It was in Valdosta they spent their formative years as a couple, making lifelong friends and investing in their local church, Greenwood Baptist.

In 1985, Blanton and Debbie returned to Athens, and in 1987, they welcomed David. Debbie became a full-time mother, creating cherished moments for her family. When David began school, Debbie returned to work at the University of Georgia where she ultimately spent the remainder of her career, working in the development office of UGA’s Main Library. Debbie deeply loved her colleagues and the university community; she enjoyed many warm friendships across UGA’s campus. This love for the people of the university community is one of the greatest gifts she passed on to her son.

Given her love of family and love for her grandmother and great-grandmother, grandchildren were perhaps the life milestone Debbie anticipated the most. She was blessed with three, whom she quickly developed a deep bond of affection. Although those years were cut short, it is undeniable the years she spent as a grandmother gave her the most joy.

Debbie’s battle with cancer was fought quietly. Never one to complain, she regretted the limitations the disease caused her, but she never became angry, cynical, or bitter about her diagnosis; nor did the diagnosis define her. From the initial diagnosis she faced the future with fortitude and an abiding faith that her life was in God’s hands.

Although she is gone from this world, she is now completely healed, standing in the presence of the Father, embraced by Jesus, and celebrating with all her family and friends who have passed before her.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brother, Leonard Isbell of Watkinsville.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Blanton Dove, Jr. as well as her son, David Dove, daughter in law, Courtney, and grandchildren, Tucker, Wells, and Kennedy.
